Just Delicious Diabetic Delights Bakery is the brain child of Donna Nelson of Gladstone, OR. On August 22, 2007, Donna decided to come out of a three year retirement. Having spent over 35 years in the medical field, she decided to look for something different. Donna asked long time friend, Nanette Goin, if she would like to partner up and open a diabetic bakery in the area. Both Donna and Nanette have diabetic husbands so when they grocery shop or go out to dinner they are well acquainted with “we have nothing sugar-free” or “sorry, not much.”
Now that you have met us by name, we are a couple of feisty grandmothers with years of baking experience, but it did not prepare us for the “baking without sugar” woes. We soon found out why there were only 4 known all sugar-free bakeries in the U.S. We found cakes wouldn’t rise or they were either dry or as dense as a hockey puck. We found in our very extensive research that safe natural sweeteners are expensive. What a nightmare.
Well, we decided to march on, spend our kid’s inheritance, and opened our first location January 21, 2008 in the Greenhouse Square in Clackamas, Oregon and become the 5th Sugar Free bakery in the U.S. Until our sign went up we used to say “we’re right next to the liquor store.” That always seemed to work.
Thanks to a exploding customer base, by the end of two years we had outgrown the 1,475 sq ft. We had 5 doors of refrigeration in the front customer area. For 10 months it was very cozy. Our customers just stood a little closer together, but on November 10, 2010 we moved 8 doors north to 16100 SE 82nd Drive into 4,000 sq.ft. Wow, talk about rock and roll time. We found we all needed roller skates to cover the new space. Having been closed for 7 days for the move, customers were standing outside our doors waiting for us to open. With the new walk-in cooler and freezer, we are better equipped to take on the hospitals and other commercial accounts that have been patiently waiting for this move, plus the continued demands (bless their hearts) of the walk-in clientele at our bakery. The new shipping department is wonderful to handle all the mail order request. We ship all over the United States. Many of our repeat customers have their own file now.
On March 11, 2011 Donna will be speaking on behalf of Just Delicious Diabetic Bakery at the Healthy Baking Seminar in Anaheim, CA. This huge event is sponsored by BakeMark and hosted by Modern Baking Magazine.
In 2009 we contacted BakeMark and asked them if they could remove the maltitol sweetener from their cake base product. It was causing distress to many of our customers who have a sensitivity to this corn base sweetener. BakeMark took the suggestions of Just Delicious Diabetic Bakery seriously and completely reformulated two major products for the benefit of the diabetic community and they did this in 9 months. This is a major accomplishment on the part of BakeMark.
Donna, Nanette & Just Delicious have been featured twice on KGW Channel 8 morning news in the “Out and About with Drew Carney” portion of the show. We experienced a HUGE public response to these airings. We didn’t realize how many people are up at 5 am and watching TV.
On February 10, 2011, Just Delicious Bakery and Nanette did a live feature on KOIN Channel 6 on the “Studio 6” program featuring one of their recipes.
We were unaware that we had been nominated and chosen one of the top 10 “Secret Sweet Spots” by Oregon Mt. Hood Territory for 2011. A video of our bakery will be available by the end of February at www.MtHoodTerritory.com. We were very excited to receive this award and have it displayed on the front door of the bakery.
We are dedicated to a healthy alternative for diabetics and calorie-counters, and we have developed a huge menu of pies, cakes, pastries, cookies, and specialty items all packed with flavor and lower carbs. ~ The Customer Service one receives from the owners Donna and Nannette of Just Delicious Bakery in Portland Oregon is absolutely unheard of in these days of rush, rush, rush. From the very first mail order I placed, I was,quite frankly, concerned that the bakery might arrive in pieces. But both Donna and Nanette were so attentive to making sure that this never happened. I must say, they have treated me like a member of the family. They checked several times by calling me and speaking with me personally to ask my preferences about ‘this way’ or ‘that way’. I paid the absolute least amount of freight/postage owing to their special attention.. They packed and repacked my order to make sure everything would fit into only 2 priority boxes. Each time I received my orders on time as promised, and both the muffins and cookies are as fresh and undamaged, as if they had been taken right out of their own ovens an hour before.
